Dirty Beats & Goosebumps : Musical Frisson

Whether you're driving in your car bumping the latest edition of ASOT or standing in the crowd listening to the djs new single, we've all experienced that moment when the music starts to build, lightens up then pauses, the beat is about to drop and you feel a ripple of chills go through your body. These goosebumps have recently been gaining increased attention by researchers and have even been given the name musical frisson.  Verifying what we already knew, McGill researchers prove that chills can be the direct result of hearing these dirty, dirty beats.  "You may have thought that chills were just a subjective concept, but that isn't the case. They involve a "clear and discrete pattern of autonomic nervous system (ANS) arousal" (Lasar).  Music has also been proven to make you more happy, HELLO this is why we're addicted to festivals. McGill researchers conclude, "If music-induced emotional states can lead to dopamine release, as our findings indicate, it may begin to explain why musical experiences are so valued"(Lasar).   Now we just hope researchers continue to read our minds and do a study on FOMO and methods on how to cope.
