Designer Interview: Atsushi Nakashima

Atsushi Nakashima
We sat down with avant garde designer Atsushi Nakashima to speak about his upcoming fashion line.  Nakashima has an extensive history in the fashion world and is ready to leave his mark on US fashion.  He worked as Jean Paul Gaultiers assistant and had a major role in desiging a number of JPG's iconic bags.  He was Diffusions head desiginer for seven years and now he has set out to bring his edgy designs to runways near you.  We love the fact that his pieces are unconventional and fashion-forward but havent crossed the line into Lady Gaga meat territory.   Below are outfits from his debut collection which is scheduled to be released this October.

E:   What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
AN: Jeans and pants

E: Who is one of your all time favorite designers?
AN: Jean Paul Gaultier

E: Whats your favorite material to use right now?
AN:  If I had to pick a material I enjoy using recently it would be materials with a shiny, glossy look. I also like to include lots of seams in my work.

E:  We see your debut collection is all female.  Is a mens collection something you see in your future?
AN: Yes, definitely.  For my first US collection I wanted to focus on creating a really strong female line.

E: What is the biggest difference you see between Japanese and US fashion?
AN: Japanese fashion tends to have more of a fluidity and consist of long designs using one piece of material, while European fashion tend to be made up of multiple pieces.

E: Whats your inspiration?
AN: I love to draw.  Before I started designing I drew and my drawings are a major source for my collections.  I get a lot of inspiration from the natural world.  I try to transfer something I see in real life into a clothing design.  I like to make pieces look as natural as possible.

2012 DJ Award Winners

Last night, the 2012 DJ Awards took place in none other than the mecca of dance music, also famously known as Ibiza.  The DJ Awards has been an annual event since its creation in 1998 where the winners are voted on by the public (so if you're unhappy that your favorite artist didn't win, look out for social media campaigns during next summer for the 2013 awards).  As to be expected, the "award" that winners take home is not your conventional mini gold statue.  Rather, it is a piece of green kryptonite, and according to djawards.com, "The word kryptonite embodies Crypto (the code and mystery of life) and Nite (the nightlife and its culture).  This draws together the sense of adventure and surprise that lies ahead as the sun begins to set and the children of the night spring to life".  Below we have listed the winners from each sub-genre of electronic music in bold, with the nominees following. We couldn't help but chuckle when we saw Tietso listed under the "electro house" category. Old Tiesto > New Tiesto

Now Trending : Aztec Leggings

Although fall temperatures have only been upon us for a weekend or two, we have already witnessed some recurring must have styles for the 2012 season.  A fresh alternative from "Native American" patterns, Aztec leggings, whether they're black & white or mutli-colored, are a bold addition to any casual Sunday Funday attire.  Pair these leggings with combat boots, a loose fitting top and a leather jacket  to complete the "I'm too tired to get dressed but still want to continue partying before the weekend is over" look.

The Morning After: Eye De-Puffers

With all of the late night events Electrolettes attend its very easy to start to get puffy, tired looking eyes.  Also, for our working readers we all know how hard it is to pretend you didn't go out on Thursday night, when your eyes look like inflated racoon rings on Friday morning.  Lucky for us, beauty companies are on our side and have created de-puffers to help mask the dreaded "2hrs of sleep" look.  Add this to the purse essentials list because with  DJS insisting to book clubs on weeknights *cough* Kaskade at Lavo this Thursday *cough*, we're going to have to look presentable enough to work the next day.  TG for casual Fridays.

Our favorite is YSL-Flash Touch Wakeup Care $44

However for Electrolettes on a budget, Aveeno has a similar product that gives the same results.. Aveenos Smart Essentials™ Anti Fatigue Eye Treatment $12

2012 Festival Season Wrap-Up

After attending some of the biggest festivals in both the U.S. and abroad during the 2012 season, we decided to rank the events from least to most favorite in addition to including the most apparent pros and cons.

music.ienlive.com

1.  EDC New York
Pros : Impressive techno / tech-house lineup
Cons: Seemed like it was thrown together last minute for money making purposes
          Noob crowd

2.  Monegros Desert Festival
Pros : 20 hours of non stop partying
          No security & re-entry all day/night
Cons : No one speaks English, we suggest investing in Rosetta Stone before attending next year

bassismyboyfriend.com

3.  Ultra Music Festival
Pros : Takes place during WMC therefore the additional day/night parties are endless
Cons : The new venue was not conducive to large crowds
          Group Therapy was not included

lessthan3.com

4.  EDC Las Vegas
Pros : Out of this world production
        Night time festival hours
Cons : Getting to the festival was an absolute nightmare
Although its not Insomniac's fault, being jipped day two was a real buzz kill

whiteraverrafting.com
5.  Electric Zoo
Pros : By far the best crowd of any festival
Less frills makes it feel like it's more about the music
Above and Beyond two days in a row (this is a biased "pro")
Cons : Sunday School tent ended the earliest
A few big acts dropped out last minute
