New News Monday

edmnyc.com
Hello Monday! We hope everyone had a great weekend, although the weather was less than desirable. Below are some of the most notable "news" stories to grace the New York City dance music community.  Enjoy!

This morning, Above and Beyond posted a photo on their Facebook page insinuating that they will be hosting a New York show in February 2013.  Seems like all the hard work New York TranceFamily has put into campaigning and social media is beginning to pay off.  Congrats!

For all of you Sci+Tec loving New Yorkers who also feel completely jipped after Dubfire's set at System Nightclub in Long Island City was aprehended by the police, (a mere fifteen minutes into his set), keep your eyes peeled for the release of his new mix CD, A Transmission, on December 14th (digitally on Christmas Eve).

Danny Tenaglia has always been known to freely voice his opinions, both good and bad, which can usually be found on his Facebook page. Last night he posted the status in the picture above after DJing at Aura, a club on Long Island letting us know that "TECHNO is here to stay".  If you were present for Danny Tenaglia and Chris Liebing at Pacha last month and like what you heard or just love relentless drums, make your way over to Glazz Nightclub in Queens this Friday, December 14thTickets

Event of the Week: On Thursday, December 13th at Mehanata Bar in the LES, Caine Novak will be hosting a gritty underground party along with techno and minimal DJ's, Duckhunter, Boji and Alexia.  According to Resident Advisor, for his set this week Novak will be "playing a live set constructed from the soundtrack of "Seventeen Moments of Spring" a Russian 70's cult film noir miniseries based on a spy novel set in 1994 Berlin.  The Portishead-like sound of this score coupled with his carefully constructed custom loops and bass lines will blow your mind". If you're tired of the same old "Thursday Regulars" crowd at every other club in Manhattan like we are you should definitely make it to this refreshingly original and creative event. Tickets

mixmag.net

Last week, on November 22, Mixmag launched their 2013 global drug survey online.  This will be the largest survey of global drug use to ever be carried out with an expected response of 50,000 people.  Mixmag has been running this study among clubbers since 1999 and it has continually been referred to by academics, drug organizations, government agencies etc.  The survey is completely anonymous and will be available until the end of December with results being published in the March or April 2013 edition of Mixmag.  Want to participate? Is Your Favorite The Greatest?

soundisstyle.com
Mixmag knows that everyone has that one track they listen to on repeat while relentlessly trying to make it their best friend's favorite song as well.  Until December 21st, Mixmag is asking you turn that passion into a vote by going to their website and entering what you believe to be the "Greatest Dance Track of All Time".  Voters can choose between 300 nominated songs from all different sub genres of dance music with release dates ranging from 1977-2012.  Dont worry, if that's not a broad enough selection for you, you even have the option of manually entering your track of choice.  The winner will be announced January 17th in the February edition of Mixmag

Amsterdam Dance Event 2012

ADE has already kicked off to an impressive start.  Today, we had the pleasure of basking in some serious techno with the Drumcode Studio Sessions consisting of Joel Mull, Joseph Capriati, Adam Beyer and Alan Fitzpatrick on be-at.tv.  Tomorrow, October 19th, Chris Liebing will host ADE's CLR event.  If you claim to love drums, "dirty beats" and an aggressive bpm count then you must tune in to hear Monoloc, Tommy Four Seven and Drumcell among others beginning at 4pm EST.

Ultra Music Festival 2013

In March of 2013 Ultra Music Festiaval will celebrate its 15th anniversary.  In honor of this milestone, for the first time ever the festival will take place on two consecutive weekends, March 15-17 and March 22-24.  Conveniently, the Winter Music Conference also falls between these two weekends making Miami an easy option for an end of the winter getaway.  Ultra tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 17th at http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/tickets/ , and we thank the festival for allowing only one ticket allowed per credit card transaction.  StubHub has really become the bane of our existences.

2012 DJ Award Winners

Last night, the 2012 DJ Awards took place in none other than the mecca of dance music, also famously known as Ibiza.  The DJ Awards has been an annual event since its creation in 1998 where the winners are voted on by the public (so if you're unhappy that your favorite artist didn't win, look out for social media campaigns during next summer for the 2013 awards).  As to be expected, the "award" that winners take home is not your conventional mini gold statue.  Rather, it is a piece of green kryptonite, and according to djawards.com, "The word kryptonite embodies Crypto (the code and mystery of life) and Nite (the nightlife and its culture).  This draws together the sense of adventure and surprise that lies ahead as the sun begins to set and the children of the night spring to life".  Below we have listed the winners from each sub-genre of electronic music in bold, with the nominees following. We couldn't help but chuckle when we saw Tietso listed under the "electro house" category. Old Tiesto > New Tiesto

Is Insomniac Responible for Two Vegas Deaths?

We would like to start of by saying that our thoughts go out to the families of the two individuals that died last week following EDC; music festivals are all about celebrating life, not putting yourself in danger.  That being said, we are not surprised the media is trying to blame Insomniac for these tragedies, in addition to claiming that they condone the use of drugs within their events.

According to the Huffington Post, twenty-two year old Emily McCaughan fell off the roof of her twenty seven story Las Vegas hotel following EDC.  Family members claim she was having paranoid delusions after taking ecstasy pills during the festival.  Maybe McCaughan did suffer through negative side effects of the illegal substance, but she voluntarily ingested them.  We all know that drugs are bad and by doing them you're putting yourself in harms way, but it's time for people to start taking responsibility for their actions instead of placing the blame on someone else.  Anyone who attended EDC this year would agree that there were massive amounts of police, (more than I saw in all of Las Vegas), drug dogs and a large medical staff in addition to the intense security check at the entrance.  The TSA should be taking lessons from Insomniac's staff, because never before have I been felt up by security to check if I was hiding illegal items in my bra.

What's even more interesting about this whole scandal is that the other individual who died following the festival was a 31 year old Florida man who friends say had been drinking prior to the incident.  Since alcohol is legal in this country, his case isn't receiving nearly as much attention and no one from his end are accusing Insomniac for hosting an "alcohol ridden" event.  So while the spokeswoman for McCaughan's family claims, "Damn it, they (drugs) are just killers every single time", maybe she should also lobby the city of Las Vegas and Insomniac to produce a "dry" festival, but for some reason we don't think this is likely...

Are We Forgetting the Purpose of Music Festivals?

filthyfriday.com
Last week during the first ever EDMBiz Conference in Las Vegas, EDC founder Pasquale Rotella announced in front of a room filled with top financial execs, industry promoters and artists that he is no longer interested in booking "big name" acts for his festivals.  An article on Billboard.biz. quotes Rotella,

"Our strategy moving forward is we don't want to book the big guys.  I don't want to be a promoter.  My passion is not selling tickets and making money.  I want to create an experience.  You don't need to book the big acts who sell out arenas"..."The DJ is important and has a job to do, but I want the budget to bring in art and production. We balance through negotiation.  They get higher fees somewhere else, but they feel our shows are special."

When question by other panel members on his controversial stance, Rotella carried on by bringing up Burning Man, a leave no trace festival which he attends every year in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.  Burning Man doesn't book any big name talent, yet it sells out year after year for it's celebration of life and all forms of bare art, i.e. sculptures, paintings and an assortment of music.  It's refreshing to hear that Rotella wants to provide his customers will an all around experience, rather than charging them hand and foot to see some of the biggest names in the business right now (who by the way were too good to show up on day three of EDC after day two was cut short due to the weather, cough cough Tiesto).   We're interested to see what Insomniac has in store for next year, as well as the years following the burst of this gigantic EDM bubble.

EDC New York Official Schedule

Pasquale Rotella really knows how to build up the anticipation for his events, waiting just 24 hours before the doors open to Met Life Stadium to release official set times. Now all you anxious ravers out there can stop complaining on twitter and facebook that you must know which DJ is performing when, as if it really matters because if you're a true electrolette you'll be there from open till close all three days! Anyway click the link below to be redirected to EDC's official timetable.

EDC Las Vegas Lineup Additions

I think we can all agree that Vegas's lineup is saturated with progressive house, dubstep, electro and trance talent, but some of us on the tech house end of the spectrum have been feeling a little left out. Thankfully, Insomniac Events turned up their ESP and added a powerful quadruplet consisting of Guy Gerber, Joris Voorn, Seth Troxler and Nic Fanciulli to their roster of artists. Although set times have not been announced yet, we do know that Voorn, Troxler and Fanciulli will be spinning at the Brooklyn Terminal Project in NYC on Friday, June 8th with Loco Dice so most likely we will see them on EDC day 2 or 3, definitely coinciding with the motto "saving the best for last".

Electronic Dance Music: A Revolution?

loustartheflyest.blogspot.com

Yesterday, in an interview with Billboard.biz, Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z stated that he wants to be a part of the current electronic dance music craze claiming that it "feels like a revolution, it feels like the kids' music".  Ever since Jay-Z's entertainment company, Roc Nation, teamed up with Three Six Zero Group, (who represent the likes of Sebastian Ingrosso, Michael Woods, Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris to name a few), leaders in the music industry have been on the lookout for Jay Z's public stamp on EDM culture, and it may be happening soon.  With Tiesto playing his remix of Kanye West's "Lost In The World" during his Ultra 2011 set, as well as in the 267th episode of his podcast Club Life, and Will.I.Am teaming up with Steve Angello and Eva Simons on "This Is Love", it's should be no surprise to avid music fans that the gap between two seemingly opposite genres is becoming smaller and smaller.

Sensation White Comes To America

It's safe to say that North America, especially the U.S., experiencing a full blown EDM takeover.  Sensation White, a festival which has been around since 2000, has finally made the leap across the northern Atlantic to show Americans what a true European festival is all about; its more than just a "concert", it's a celebration of life.  No further news has been announced regarding date or location, but there will be an event launch party on May 31st.  Below is the preview video as well as a video of Hardwell speaking about Sensation White Amsterdam 2012.
